Now that you’ve used images I chose to create a poem, it’s your turn. One little thing, though: many of the images on Flickr are copyrighted– meaning you’re not allowed to use them without permission.  But there’s a section of Flickr called “Creative Commons”.  Pictures in Creative Commons are free to use in your as long as you give credit to the photographer.

Go to Flickr’s Creative Commons page by clicking HERE.  Find a picture that sparks your imagination or makes you feel something deeply.  Write a poem about it in your blog.

The InSite (7th and 8th Grade)

The InSite

I just discovered this sensational website called The InSite.  It’s all about teen issues and how to deal with life’s dramas.

Spend at least 30 minutes checking it out and answer the following questions in your blog using your own words:

1) What is something you learned about dealing with emotions (for example, guilt, loneliness, and embarrassment)?

2) What is something you learned about dealing with relationships with friends, family, or boyfriend/girlfriend?

3) What is something you learned about your health (for example, drugs, sleep, and body image)?

Assignment 1 (7th and 8th Graders): You Know What You Did Last Summer…

…so let us in on it! Welcome back 7th and 8th graders. Your first assignment of the year is to create a slideshow of what you did this summer. Think your summer was boring? In that case create a “top 10 list of why my summer was boring“. Was your summer A M A Z I N G ? Tell us all the details and don’t forget to include pictures.

Below is slideshow about my summer:

Now it’s your turn:

Create a Powerpoint about your summer. Click HERE to see how. If you don’t have pictures to bring in, you can use other people’s photos from Flickr that are similar to what happened to you.

Never Ever

never_ever

*Think about all of the older people you know– teachers, parents, coaches, neighbors, friends, relatives, acquaintances.  Probably one or several of the adults you know have provided you with an example of how not to live your life.  Look ahead to your future, and think about the one thing you will not let happen.

For example, growing up my dad was a very busy doctor.  In many ways he was awesome– a great listener, a funny storyteller, and cooked kick-butt Mexican food.  But during the weekends he used to leave me and my sister in the waiting room of the hospital for hours while he took care of patients.  Now that I’m about to be a father I will never take my daughter’s time for granted.  Every hour counts and I will fill them all with laughter, learning, and hugs.

Hello 9th graders,

It’s me, Mr. Lahana!  Hope your summer was awesome and that you’re not missing your old friends and teachers at The Island School too much.  I was wondering if you could do me one last favor.  Can you write a blog post about your first week of high school?  How has it been so far?  What are your classes like? What are your new friends like? Have you joined any clubs or sports teams?  Tell us everything!!!

Missing you,

Mr. Lahana

Fun with Flickr: Photo Storytelling

random-photo-beard You think I’m a freak, right? But there’s a very good explanation for this.   It all started…

random-photo-eyelashes She knew that whichever lash she chose would change her life (or at least the night) forever…

random-photo-alien “Just be cool man. We’ll pop in and out of the party and no one will notice…”

random-photo-person-in-person Megan knew this day would come, she just didn’t think it would happen today of all days!

Pick one of the photos above and finish the story.

Nasty Concoction

When I was a kid, sometimes I’d do stupid stuff.  For example, and I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOING THIS, me and my friend would have contests to see who could make the most disgusting meal out of stuff from our refrigerator. I survived, but boy do I have stories…

What three food items would you combine to make the most disgusting concoction EVER?  Tell the story of what happened when you fed it to someone…

*** BONUS ***

What weird game did you play when you were a kid?
